Reasons to listen to Fado in Lisbon<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Fado is a musical\nstyle loaded with feeling, which comes from the soul of the one who sings it.\nEssentially, Fado sings the feeling, heartbreaks of love, longing, daily life\nand achievements<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is one of the\nmost important symbols of Portugal and recognized by UNESCO as Intangible\nCultural Heritage of Humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Fado was born in the lower classes<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In the 19th century,\nFado was sung spontaneously, on the street and in environments frequented by\nsailors, prostitutes and other marginal figures. Fado singer was a bully, who\nusually had a razor and several tattoos. The intellectual layer of Portuguese\nsociety totally repudiated Fado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Fado means destiny<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The word fado comes\nfrom the Latin \u201cfatum\u201d which means destiny. In the Lus\u00edadas, Lu\u00eds de Cam\u00f5es\nrefers several times to the word fado, used with the meaning of fatality,\nwithout any connection to a musical genre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only in the 19th\ncentury did the word Fado begin to mean a popular song typical of the\nPortuguese soul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Censorship almost ended fado<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

During the Estado\nNovo, in the 20th century, censorship in Portugal totally conditioned the freedom\nof expression of cultural activities. Fado had to be licensed and regulated, in\norder to be able to control the contents<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. The far left tried to silence Fado<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

As an activity with\nancient cultural roots, the extreme left tried to silence Fado after the 25th\nof April, ignoring the strong democratic and popular character of the music.\nThe consolidation of democracy allowed the recovery of Fado in the cultural\nlandscape<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Fado is a success story<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The fado singer, as\nan artist, as  professional, emerged in\nthe 1930s. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fado leaves the\nalleys and moves to large stages and the well-known fado houses. From the second\nhalf of the 20th century, Fado is taken to several countries around the world,\nand Fado singer Am\u00e1lia Rodrigues was, without a doubt, the great ambassador of\nthis Portuguese musical style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since then, many\nother fadistas have followed in his footsteps, such as Maria da F\u00e9, Carlos do\nCarmo, Dulce Pontes, Mariza, among many others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jo\u00e3o Braga also\nmarked a strong position with regard to the renewal of fado in Portugal. He\nbrought other great poets to the musical scene, among which, for example,\nFernando Pessoa, Miguel Torga, Sophia de Mello Breyner, among many others,\nstand out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Fado has\ngained a new lease of life, with artists giving a new \u201cdress\u201d to this musical\nstyle, especially Ana Moura, Mafalda Arnauth, Mariza, Carminho, Cuca Roseta,\nCaman\u00e9 and Marco Oliveira.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is no shortage of places in Lisbon to listen to Fado<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the Fado Vadio\nvenues in Bairro Alto and Alfama where amateur Fado singers show their talents\nto restaurant patrons, today you can hear Fado in concert halls in Portugal and\nabroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, there are places in\nLisbon with a strong tradition of Fado where you can find fadistas with some\nfame and a lot of talent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
